Maca is a root vegetable originating from the Andes Mountains in Peru. It is valued for enriching the diet, offering a rich source of fiber and protein, and containing very little salt. It is also ideal for those following raw food diets. In the Junín region of Peru, maca is eaten in many forms: fresh alongside meat, baked on hot stones, dried and cooked in milk, fermented into a traditional drink called "maca chica," or ground into flour for use in baked goods.

The maca powder is derived from its dried roots, which have been consumed as both food and medicine for over two millennia. This resilient plant thrives at altitudes above 3,500 meters, in rocky, barren soil, enduring temperatures as low as -10°C. It is the only edible plant capable of surviving in such extreme conditions. For locals, maca is a staple energy source. While attempts have been made to cultivate maca in other climates and soils, concerns arise regarding whether the roots grown elsewhere retain the same properties, as they often fail to fully develop.
