There are about 60 species in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, mainly in eastern Asia. In Poland, there are only two species of cherry tree in its natural state: the dwarf cherry, which grows in the southern uplands and is protected by law, and the bird cherry. The cherry tree appeared around the 8th century in what is now France and spread throughout Europe in the late 16th century. Traces uncovered by archaeologists and written records show that the cherry tree was already cultivated in the 3rd century BC. The medicinal properties of cherries have been known in folk medicine for centuries.
